Atlético Madrid host Manchester United at the Riyadh Air Metropolitano on Tuesday in Matchday 2 of the Champions League league phase, kick-off 21:00 CEST (20:00 BST). United arrive winless in four since beating Sabah 4-0 on Matchday 1, and without Luke Shaw and Kobbie Mainoo, who did not travel. It is Atlético's first home game of this Champions League campaign.
Manchester United team news
Shaw and Mainoo both picked up problems in Saturday's 1-1 draw with Tottenham and are not ready for Tuesday's match, according to Manchester United's website. Patrick Dorgu has a hamstring injury, and Michael Carrick expects him to miss several weeks. Benjamin Šeško remains out with the shin problem that returned before the international break (our earlier report), with more tests to come and no return date, Sports Mole reports.
Matthijs de Ligt has travelled and could return to a matchday squad after a long spell out with a back problem. Carrick said he is confident about using him but stressed that his return has to be managed carefully, so the team sheets, due about an hour before kick-off, will show whether he is involved. Noussair Mazraoui is a doubt after the knock he took on Morocco duty. United list him among their injured players, and no definitive ruling for Tuesday has been published.
Bruno Fernandes has been carrying a niggle, but Carrick played down the concern. According to United's website, he said the problem was largely resolved, with slight symptoms remaining, and that Fernandes is in good shape.
Where United stand
The Sabah win has been followed by a home defeat by Manchester City (our derby recap), a Carabao Cup exit against Brighton, and 1-1 draws at Fulham and against Tottenham. On Saturday Tottenham played the last stretch with 10 men after Rodrigo Bentancur was sent off, and Dominic Solanke equalised in stoppage time. That leaves United with one win from six Premier League games.
I totally believe that we'll come through it.
Michael Carrick, press conference, Monday 12 October, according to Manchester United's transcript
Carrick also said Atlético are as dangerous as any team United could face in Europe.
Atlético Madrid
Atlético lost 2-1 at Liverpool on Matchday 1 and have since won four league games in a row, including the 2-1 win over Real Madrid in the Madrid derby (our recap). The latest came at Alavés on Saturday, 2-1, with Cristian Romero heading the winner late on after Alavés' Ángel Pérez was sent off. At the time of writing Atlético have not published a squad list, but Sports Mole reports no injury concerns.
Diego Simeone, in charge since December 2011, pointed to the way United press high up the pitch when he spoke to the media on Monday.
The last meetings
The sides last met in a competitive game in the 2021/22 Champions League round of 16. It finished 1-1 at the Metropolitano, and Atlético won 1-0 at Old Trafford to go through. In a pre-season friendly in Stockholm on 1 August, United won 2-1, with Bryan Mbeumo scoring twice.
UK listings show the match on Amazon Prime Video, and the referee is Glenn Nyberg of Sweden. The rest of the night is in our Matchday 2 preview.
