Tenerife forward Jesús de Miguel is in intensive care at the Hospital Universitario Nuestra Señora de Candelaria in a serious but stable condition, CD Tenerife said in an official statement on Monday. De Miguel collapsed after a collision with Andorra goalkeeper Jesús Owono, and their LaLiga Hypermotion match at the Estadio Heliodoro Rodríguez López was suspended at 2-2 in stoppage time.
What the club has said
The club said its medical staff were at the hospital and would report when there was news.
What happened on the pitch
The match was moved from Sunday to Monday after storm warnings. Andorra had equalised late on to make it 2-2.
In stoppage time, Reuters reported, Owono charged towards the centre circle to clear a long ball and appeared to strike De Miguel with his knee. Owono was shown a straight red card. Medical staff treated De Miguel on the pitch while players from both teams signalled for help, and several of his teammates were in tears. He was then taken to hospital by ambulance. Supporters outside the ground applauded as the ambulance left.
The referee met the captains and coaches to communicate the decision to suspend the match. Spanish outlet The Objective reported that players from both teams agreed to stop and that the post-match press conferences were cancelled. CD Tenerife said the match had been suspended for medical reasons concerning De Miguel. El Desmarque reported that Owono, after his dismissal, turned back to check on De Miguel.
Reports on his condition
Reuters, citing multiple local media reports, said De Miguel suffered a cardiac arrest and was resuscitated by emergency personnel. Spanish radio network COPE reported that one of its journalists had confirmed a cardiorespiratory arrest and that De Miguel was breathing on his own afterwards. The club's statement did not confirm those reports or provide a diagnosis.
Match status
The match was suspended at 2-2 in stoppage time. No official decision on whether or when it will resume, or on its final status, had been announced at the time of writing. Spanish news agency Europa Press reported that the Competition Committee will decide whether the match is resumed or counted as finished.
Messages of support
CD Tenerife sent encouragement and full support to De Miguel. LaLiga Hypermotion said it was sending its support and encouragement for his recovery. FC Andorra said it was sending its strength and best wishes after the serious incident, hoped he would recover soon and sent a strong embrace to the player, his family and Tenerife.
