Michael Carrick expects to be in charge when Roma visit Old Trafford on Tuesday, after Manchester United lost 2-0 at Chelsea on Saturday. Asked by TNT Sports whether he expects to be in charge for the Champions League game, Carrick answered "Yeah." The result was United's ninth game without a win in all competitions, which Sky Sports described as their worst run since September 1984, and it left them 17th in the Premier League.

That is what has been said and confirmed. This piece sets out what Carrick told reporters, how the game was lost and what the table now looks like. It leaves out the speculation about his future, which belongs in a separate report.

What Carrick said after the game

United's supporters made their feelings clear after the defeat, and Carrick was asked about the boos by TNT Sports. His first answer was that there was "a lot of emotion" around the club, and he then spoke about the supporters and about what the club wants to achieve.

We are a great football club but we want to win football matches.

He added that the supporters "make a lot of effort and pay a lot of money to watch us play", according to Sky Sports. Asked whether he felt Martinez had let him down, Carrick said no, and TNT reported that he had not seen the incident that led to the red card. On how the match turned, his explanation was short: United did not get going in the second half, and the team "found a way of unravelling".

At his news conference he was careful not to take comfort from a first half in which United had two goals ruled out.

"I'm not clinging to the first half as a huge positive," Carrick said, and added that the players had to be given "something to really get their teeth into in a good direction".

How the game was lost

Chelsea scored first through Rogers in the 50th minute, according to the club's match report. Martinez was then sent off in the 63rd minute for a second yellow card after a VAR check for an elbow on Fofana, and Palmer converted a penalty a minute later. NBC Sports puts the penalty at 63 minutes, while Chelsea's report says 64, so the exact minute differs between sources.

United also had three goals ruled out for offside over the course of the game: Neto in the first half, Cunha from a corner, and Estevao late on, ESPN and Chelsea's report said. Mbeumo hit the bar in injury time. For Chelsea, Xabi Alonso said the half-time message had worked.

At half-time, we spoke and the reaction in the second half was better.

He added that Chelsea had said they were going to win the game with the ball.

The run and the table

United have one league win from nine games this season, with four draws and four defeats, and that gives them 7 points. They are level on points with Crystal Palace in 18th and ahead of them on goal difference, which is what keeps them out of the bottom three. Sky had warned before the game that United could end the weekend in the relegation zone.

Asked whether the team is equipped for a change of mentality, Carrick pointed out that the table can move quickly in either direction.

You can also look at how far you can move up the league quite quickly if you win football matches.

Michael Carrick, as quoted by Sky Sports

It has been a difficult month. Bruno Fernandes criticised Carrick's tactics after the defeat at Como and was dropped for the Bournemouth game, then returned at Chelsea, ESPN reported. We covered that Champions League result in our Como recap and the league run in our report on the draw at Leeds.

Roma on Tuesday

United host Roma at Old Trafford on Tuesday 3 November at 21:00 CET. They have three points from three Champions League games after losing at Atlético and Como and beating Sabah 4-0.

Martinez's red card raises a selection question. A red card in the Premier League normally means a one-match ban, which would rule him out of the next league game rather than the Roma tie, but we have not seen an FA statement, so we cannot confirm it.

What is not confirmed

Carrick saying that he expects to be in charge is not a confirmation from the club, and we have not seen an official statement on his position. We will update this page after his pre-match press conference. For more on the club, see our Manchester United page.
