Real Madrid came from 3-1 down to beat Roma 4-3 at the Stadio Olimpico on Wednesday, scoring three times from corners between the 83rd minute and the end of normal time. José Mourinho was back in Rome as Madrid's manager, having led Roma to the Conference League title and a Europa League final, and the home crowd welcomed him.

Roma take control

Marten de Roon put Roma ahead with a long-range strike in the 20th minute. Kylian Mbappé levelled five minutes later, his shot deflecting off Gianluca Mancini and beating goalkeeper Pierluigi Gollini. It was Mbappé's 100th Champions League appearance, and the goal was his 72nd in the competition, according to the BBC and AFP.

Donyell Malen then scored twice early in the second half. His second was flagged for offside, but VAR ruled that Federico Valverde had kept him onside and the goal stood. Mbappé had a goal ruled out for offside after the hour, and Roma held a 3-1 lead until the 83rd minute. They had already lost Manu Koné to injury in the first half.

Three corners decide it

Mourinho made a double change at the 59th minute, bringing on Arda Güler for Denzel Dumfries and Endrick for Vinícius Júnior. Carlos Espí, another substitute, made it 3-2 in the 83rd minute by finishing the rebound after Gollini saved Endrick's header from a corner. Espí's goal was initially ruled out for offside before being awarded. Endrick then headed in a Güler corner two minutes later to make it 3-3, and Antonio Rüdiger scored the winner from another Güler corner as normal time ran out.

Roma coach Gian Piero Gasperini spoke of regret after the match.

There is huge regret, because a game played like that should not have ended with that epilogue.

Gian Piero Gasperini, speaking to Italian broadcasters after the match, in Football Italia's translation

Gasperini said Roma had been too passive defending corners and were paralysed in the closing minutes, but that his side had otherwise been up to the task, according to Football Italia.

Mourinho said afterwards that Roma had deserved to go ahead and that it was difficult for them to maintain that intensity for 90 minutes, according to Goal. He also said the win, Madrid's second of the league phase, had put his side in a very good position.

What it means

Madrid have won both of their league-phase matches and have six points. Roma have one point from two games.
