Real Madrid were founded in 1902 and have played at the Santiago Bernabéu since 1947, a stadium rebuilt over the last decade with a retractable pitch, a wraparound steel skin and a capacity of roughly 78,000. The 78,107 who watched the Clásico there in October 2025 formed the biggest crowd in La Liga that season.

No club in football has won more. Thirty-six Spanish league titles and a record 15 European Cups, more than double the tally of any rival, the 15th of them in 2024. The club is also one of four in Spain owned by its members rather than a private investor, with the president elected by socios, which makes Madrid's boardroom politics a genuine news beat rather than a footnote.

Their most recent league title came in 2023/24, with Barcelona taking the championship in each of the two seasons that followed.
