Liverpool were founded in 1892 after a rent dispute split the tenants of Anfield from Everton, an argument that left the new club with the ground and sent Everton across Stanley Park. Anfield now holds 61,276 following the Anfield Road expansion, and the Kop remains the most recognisable single stand in English football.

The trophy record is the argument for the club's stature. Twenty English league titles, level with Manchester United on the outright record, and six European Cups, more than any other English club has won. The most recent league title came in 2024/25, the club's 20th, sealed in Arne Slot's first season in charge after taking over from Jürgen Klopp.

Anfield's European nights are the club's identity as much as any trophy, and the comebacks against Barcelona in 2019 and Milan in 2005 are the reference points every new one is measured against.
