Serie A

Serie A is the top division of Italian football. A national championship has been played in Italy since 1898, but the single round-robin league in its modern form dates from 1929/30, and its winners are still identified by the Scudetto, the small tricolour shield worn on the following season's shirt. Twenty clubs play 380 matches from August to May.

Its defining constraint is infrastructure. Serie A averaged 30,739 spectators a game in 2025/26, close to Spain but well behind England and Germany, and most clubs still play in stadiums owned by their city rather than by the club, which caps matchday revenue and has turned stadium redevelopment into a permanent political story in Milan, Rome and beyond. The football carries its own signature: this is the league where the coach is dissected as closely as the players, and where a tactical shift is treated as news in itself.
