Roma and Inter drew 2-2 at the Stadio Olimpico on Saturday, and the two perfect records that made the fixture what it was ended together. Manu Koné scored twice before half-time. Lautaro Martínez scored twice after it.

Roma were in front inside six minutes. Paulo Dybala worked the ball out to Nahuel Molina on the right, Molina's return picked out Koné inside the area, and the midfielder beat Josep Martínez. Inter's two openings of the half went begging: Yann Bisseck got clean through and was smothered by Mile Svilar, and Alessandro Bastoni struck the outside of the post from a tight angle.

Roma's second, on 37 minutes, needed a review to stand. Dybala crossed from the right, Gianluca Mancini got a touch, and Koné finished at the far post. The flag went up at once, and Davide Massa overturned it after the VAR check, announcing that Koné had been in a legal position when the ball was played.

Fifty-one seconds

That was how long Inter needed after the restart. Mancini lost the ball in midfield, Marcus Thuram carried it forward and squared, and Lautaro Martínez turned a scuffed left-footed finish across Svilar. Inter had most of what followed. Petar Sučić and Carlos Augusto came on together just before the hour, Gian Piero Gasperini made three changes at once on sixty minutes, and Roma spent long stretches defending the lead.

Their chance to end it came on 67 minutes, when Donyell Malen turned inside the six-yard box and Josep Martínez blocked his shot with his face. Twelve minutes later Inter were level. Svilar kept out a Thuram header on the line from a corner, Lautaro headed the rebound against the crossbar, and after Manuel Akanji and Bisseck both got a touch in the scramble, the Inter captain finished from close range.

Two managers, two readings

When a match lasts 100 minutes, you have to approach it the right way.

Cristian Chivu, speaking in the press room after the match

Chivu began with the second half, saying that what he had to tell his players about the first was said at half-time and stays in the dressing room. He said Inter had played a great match after the interval for attitude, determination, quality and personality, and called it a good point on a difficult ground.

The way we conceded was too superficial and, if you like, presumptuous.

Gian Piero Gasperini, speaking to DAZN

Gasperini said both sides could have won it, and that the goal at the start of the second half changed the game and gave Inter their energy back. He pointed to Malen's chance as the moment Roma might have made it 3-1, and said his players never stopped trying to win.

What the point is worth

Both sides go into the international break on 13 points from five Serie A matches, the records they carried into the evening now gone. Lazio and Como, both on 10, are the only sides who can reach 13 in this round. Lazio played at Venezia later on Saturday, and Como go to Frosinone on Sunday.

The draw ended Roma's run of nine straight league wins going back to last season, two short of the club record of eleven, and left them unbeaten in fifteen league matches at the Olimpico. Koné is only the fifth Roma player to score twice in the first half of a Serie A game against Inter, after Roberto Pruzzo, Francesco Graziani, Abel Balbo and Francesco Totti. For Chivu it was a sixth occasion as Inter manager on which his side have avoided defeat in the league after going two goals behind.

Both teams wore black armbands and a minute's silence was held before kick-off for Sandro Mazzola, who died on Saturday aged 83.

Roma's wait for a home win over Inter now runs past ten years. They last managed it in 2016, and in the ten meetings in Rome since, Inter have won six and drawn four.
