Bundesliga

The Bundesliga is the top division of German football, founded in 1963 to replace a patchwork of regional championships with a single national league. Eighteen clubs play 306 matches, two fewer teams and 74 fewer games than England, Spain or Italy, with a real winter break of several weeks in the middle of the season.

Crowds are its signature. The 2025/26 season drew an average of 42,311 a game, a figure built on deliberately cheap tickets, the standing terraces that other major leagues abolished, and the 50+1 rule, which keeps the controlling stake in a club with its members and effectively blocks the outright takeovers that reshaped English football. The trade-off shows in the table. Bayern Munich have won 34 of the 63 Bundesliga titles, more than every other club in the league's history combined.
