Premier League

The Premier League is the top division of English football, founded in 1992 when the First Division clubs broke away from the Football League to sell their television rights themselves. Twenty clubs play 380 matches between August and May, the bottom three are relegated to the Championship, and there is no winter shutdown of the kind used in Spain, Italy and Germany.

That founding decision explains most of what the league has become. The domestic broadcast contract running from 2025/26 to 2028/29 is worth £6.7 billion, the largest sports media rights deal ever concluded in the UK, and overseas rights now sell for a comparable figure. Money is also shared more evenly here than in any other major European league, which is why newly promoted clubs can spend competitively and why the title race and the relegation fight both tend to stay alive into the final weeks.

Arsenal won the 2025/26 title with 85 points, a fourth Premier League and 14th English championship, and their first since 2004.
