Bruno Fernandes

Bruno Fernandes is an attacking midfielder and captain of Manchester United, born in Maia in northern Portugal. He left for Italy at seventeen and spent five seasons with Novara, Udinese and Sampdoria before returning home to Sporting CP, where the form that earned his January 2020 move to Old Trafford began.

He is a volume creator rather than a controller. He takes the shot, plays the risky pass and takes the set pieces, which makes him both United's most productive attacking player and the one most often blamed when the team is flat. He took the armband in 2023 and has held it through several managerial changes.

He lifted the League Cup in 2023 and the FA Cup in 2024, the trophies of a captaincy served largely through rebuilding years. For Portugal he has been a fixture across multiple major tournaments, playing alongside and increasingly in place of the generation ahead of him.
