Manchester United

Manchester United were founded in 1878 as Newton Heath, a railway workers' team, took their current name in 1902 and moved to Old Trafford in 1910. The ground holds 74,310, still the largest club stadium in England, and a new 100,000-seat replacement beside it was announced in 2025 at a projected cost of around £2 billion, with the required land secured in 2026.

The club's 20 English league titles are the joint record with Liverpool, and three European Cups came in 1968, 1999 and 2008. The 1999 side completed the first English treble. The 1958 Munich air disaster, which killed eight players, remains the defining event in the club's history and shaped the rebuild that followed under Matt Busby.

The last league title arrived in 2012/13, Alex Ferguson's final season, and the years since have made United the most scrutinised underachiever in the sport. They finished third in 2025/26 and returned to the Champions League.
