Michael Carrick

Michael Carrick is Manchester United's head coach, born in Wallsend on Tyneside in July 1981. He came through at West Ham, spent two seasons at Tottenham and joined United in 2006, where he played for twelve years as the deep midfielder the side was built around, winning five league titles and the 2008 Champions League before retiring in 2018. He was capped by England across three major tournament cycles.

He moved straight onto the United coaching staff under José Mourinho and Ole Gunnar Solskjær, and had a first spell as caretaker in late 2021. His first job in his own right was at Middlesbrough, where he took a side in the Championship's lower half to the play-offs in his first season and spent three years in charge.

United brought him back as interim head coach in January 2026 after Rúben Amorim's dismissal. His first match was a 2-0 win over Manchester City at Old Trafford, and the club made the appointment permanent in the summer of 2026 after a third-place finish that returned United to the Champions League.

His teams are organised around control of the ball in midfield and quick, direct attacking once possession turns over, and he is a notably calm presence in press conferences, rarely rising to a question.
