Shea Lacey and Mason Mount had Manchester United 2-0 up inside 10 minutes at Old Trafford on Wednesday. By full-time Brighton had won 3-2, knocked United out of the Carabao Cup in the third round and ended a home record that had lasted 50 years.

According to Brighton's official match report, United had gone 145 games at Old Trafford without defeat when two goals in front. The PA news agency noted it was the first time since 1976 that they had lost there from that position, and Michael Carrick's side were booed off at the end.

Lacey's first start ended in a cup exit

Lacey, 19 and making his first senior start, cut onto his left and put United ahead in the eighth minute. PA noted he was the first teenager to score on his first United start since Marcus Rashford.

Mount doubled the lead in the 10th minute. Brighton then took control, and in first-half stoppage time Jaouen Hadjam picked out Charalampos Kostoulas, who got in behind the United defence and scored past goalkeeper Karl Darlow.

Brighton turned the tie in the second half

Brighton levelled in the 65th minute. Benjamin Šeško lost the ball in a promising position, and Pascal Gross finished past Darlow.

Four minutes later Maxim De Cuyper, on as a substitute, finished from close range to complete the comeback.

United's big chance to equalise came with about 15 minutes left. Bruno Fernandes, on as a substitute, played Rashford through, and Steele saved. Brighton's report said Rashford was half a yard offside. Brighton had further chances of their own, including one for Kostoulas.

Carrick takes the blame

Speaking after the match, as reported by PA, Carrick said: "I totally take responsibility." He pointed to earlier setbacks, including the last-minute goal against Everton and the goal against Manchester City.

United play Fulham on Sunday before the international break. "We've got to react to it," Carrick said.

Brighton go into the fourth round, where they will visit the winners of Manchester City v Norwich. City and Norwich meet on Thursday, 17 September, and fourth-round ties are scheduled for the week commencing 26 October.
