Benjamin Šeško has withdrawn from Slovenia's squad for the international break with a recurrence of the shin problem that ended his first season at Manchester United. The club said on Monday that he will have tests this week before his individual recovery plan is set. United have not given a timeline for his return.

The 23-year-old missed Sunday's 1-1 Premier League draw at Fulham after feeling pain following the Carabao Cup defeat by Brighton four days earlier. He had been called up for four Nations League games, two against Scotland and one each against North Macedonia and Switzerland, and will stay in England instead.

Is Šeško injured?

Yes. Michael Carrick confirmed after the Fulham game that the problem is in his shin. Šeško started against Brighton at Old Trafford on Wednesday 16 September, felt pain afterwards and was left out of the matchday squad at Craven Cottage.

Asked about him after the 1-1 draw, Carrick said United were still assessing the striker and that he had no further news beyond the fact that Šeško "felt pain on his shin".

What have Manchester United said?

United's statement on Monday confirmed the withdrawal and noted that Šeško last played against Brighton before missing the Fulham game. It ended: "Benjamin will undergo tests this week before defining his individual recovery plan." It did not describe the injury.

Šeško addressed it on Instagram. He apologised for missing Slovenia's games, said his full focus was now on his recovery, and promised to be the team's biggest fan until he could play for them again.

When could Šeško be back?

United have not said, and no return date has been reported. The timing helps. United do not play again until Tottenham visit Old Trafford on Saturday 10 October, 20 days after the Fulham game, so he will miss no United matches while the tests are done and the plan is drawn up.

After Spurs, United go to Atlético Madrid in the Champions League on Tuesday 13 October, then play away at Leeds and Como. How many of those games Šeško is available for depends on the plan the club sets out after this week's tests.

Šeško's injury history

The shin problem dates from May. It ended his first season at Old Trafford early and kept him out of all of United's pre-season friendlies, and he has been brought back gradually since. He has six appearances this season, with two goals, and has started twice: the 4-0 Champions League win over Sabah, when he scored, and the Brighton game. He has not yet started a Premier League match.

It is not the first time injury has cost him international duty since he joined from RB Leipzig in August 2025. A knee injury in the 2-2 draw at Tottenham in November 2025 kept him out of Slovenia's World Cup qualifiers against Kosovo and Sweden. He came back to finish the season as United's joint top scorer with Bryan Mbeumo, on 12 goals in all competitions.

Who else are Manchester United missing?

Šeško is one of four United players to withdraw from international duty. Kobbie Mainoo and Marcus Rashford pulled out of the England squad, as covered in our report on England's five withdrawals, and goalkeeper Karl Darlow did not join up with Wales. United said each of the three would be assessed and given an individual recovery plan during the break.

Matthijs de Ligt, Manuel Ugarte and Amad Diallo were already out before the trip to Fulham, as the preview set out.
