Manchester City lost 2-4 to Paris Saint-Germain at the Etihad Stadium on Wednesday, on matchday 2 of the Champions League league phase. Désiré Doué, Ousmane Dembélé and Vitinha scored inside the first 32 minutes, and Erling Haaland scored twice after the break, in the 53rd and 75th minutes.

It was City's first defeat in eight matches, and it dropped them to 17th in the 36-team table with three points from two games. PSG, the holders, are top, and we previewed the tie in our Champions League matchday 2 preview. Haaland's first goal was his 37th in the competition for City, passing Sergio Agüero's 36, and his second made it 38, according to Manchester City.

PSG scored three before half-time

City began well. Rayan Cherki went down under a challenge from Marquinhos and the appeal was waved away, then Matvey Safonov punched a corner against his own crossbar. PSG struck twice within two minutes. Doué hit a low shot from the edge of the box in the 13th minute, and in the 15th Dembélé headed in Doué's cross.

Achraf Hakimi headed against a post before Vitinha made it 3-0 in the 32nd minute, set up by Warren Zaïre-Emery. UEFA named Vitinha its player of the match.

Haaland scores twice, but Akliouche restores the lead

Enzo Maresca made three changes at half-time, bringing on Matheus Nunes, Iliman Ndiaye and Ayyoub Bouaddi. Ndiaye's cross found Haaland, who headed in for 1-3 in the 53rd minute. Maghnes Akliouche then made it 1-4 in the 62nd minute with a shot from outside the box that beat Gianluigi Donnarumma.

City kept pushing and hit the woodwork twice after the break, through Enzo Fernández and Haaland. Haaland scored again in the 75th minute, finishing Bouaddi's low cross. Nuno Mendes made a goal-line clearance, Safonov denied Haaland a hat-trick, and late on Donnarumma saved a penalty from Ferran Torres, a former City forward.

Maresca says City deserved more

Enzo Maresca said afterwards, in reaction published by Manchester City, that his side were much better after the interval, and he passed on what Luis Enrique had said at the end of the game.

Luis said at the end of the game that they were quite lucky today.

"We created enough to deserve something more," Maresca said. Marc Guéhi, in the same post-match reaction, said: "Second half was the complete opposite, we were a lot more aggressive."

Pep Guardiola watched from the stands, in a flat cap, on his first return to the Etihad since leaving City after a decade as manager.
