Real Madrid lost 2-1 at Atlético Madrid on Sunday, beaten in the first Madrid derby of the season after Dean Huijsen was sent off for bringing down Giuliano Simeone inside the penalty area. Alejandro Grimaldo scored the penalty that followed, in the 53rd minute. The referee, Ortiz Arias, showed Huijsen a yellow card first and upgraded it to red after a VAR review.

Jonathan David made it 2-0 in the 59th. Antonio Rüdiger headed one back in the 89th from a Bernardo free kick, by which time Real Madrid had spent most of the second half with 10 men. Reports give five different minutes for the sending-off itself, between the 48th and the 53rd, so it is not stated here.

The two points Real Madrid carried into the Riyadh Air Metropolitano, set out in the derby preview, have become a drop of two places. LaLiga's table after the completed round has Barcelona on 21 points from seven, Atlético second on 16, Real Betis third on the same 16 with a worse goal difference, and Real Madrid fourth on 15. It was Real Madrid's second league defeat of the season.

They had arrived second, beaten only at Real Betis. Atlético had 13 points, having lost at Athletic Club and drawn at home to Villarreal. Barcelona had already stretched the lead at the top the day before, having won 3-1 at Sevilla.

Atlético were the better side before the sending-off

The red card changed the game, but it did not create the pattern. According to Opta, Real Madrid finished with 0.32 expected goals, their lowest figure in a La Liga match since February 2015. Atlético reached 2.38.

The first half produced one shot on target between the two teams, Opta said, and Atlético committed 10 fouls in it, their highest first-half total against Real Madrid since April 2018. Diego Simeone's side had set the terms of the afternoon long before they had an extra man.

Jonathan David has now scored in each of his first three league games

David's goal made him the first Atlético player this century to score in each of his first three La Liga appearances for the club, Opta said. The win also ended a personal run for Simeone, who had lost all three of his previous La Liga meetings with José Mourinho during Mourinho's first spell at Real Madrid.

Mourinho argued the derby should have been 11 against nine

Mourinho opened his press conference by holding up two printed photographs, of Cristian Romero's challenge on Jude Bellingham and Kang-in Lee's on Fede Valverde.

We could have saved ourselves the press conference, because the story of the match is here. They are two clear red cards.

José Mourinho, speaking after the match, in comments published by Real Madrid

He questioned the referee's appointment and the record of the VAR official, Trujillo Suárez. On the decision that actually reduced his side to 10 men, he was more careful.

I confess I still haven't seen the Huijsen sending-off. I was too far away to be able to judge it.

Mourinho, on the red card itself

The club took the same line. Real Madrid's own match report was headlined on a dreadful refereeing performance, and said Ortiz Arias had spared red cards for Romero and Lee in the first half.

Valverde has a severe ankle injury

Real Madrid said on Sunday evening that tests had diagnosed severe trauma to Valverde's left ankle, sustained during the match, and that he would have further tests within hours. It is the same ankle in the photograph Mourinho held up. No suspension for Huijsen had been announced by Monday morning.

The international break follows. Real Madrid host Villarreal in La Liga on 10 October, before their next Champions League fixture, away to Roma on 14 October at 21:00 CEST.
