Alexander Zverev beat Learner Tien 7-6(3), 6-3 at The O2 in London on Sunday afternoon to win the Laver Cup back for Team Europe, 13-5. It was the fourth time he has clinched the event, after 2018, 2019 and 2021. It came a day after Alex de Minaur had come from a set down to beat him.

Team Europe lost 15-9 in San Francisco last year. As our preview set out, they came to London with Yannick Noah still looking for his first title as captain. He has it now, and Europe have won six of the nine editions.

How the points built up

Wins are worth one point on Friday, two on Saturday and three on Sunday, and the first team to 13 takes the trophy. Friday went 3-1 to Europe. Casper Ruud came from a set down to beat Francisco Cerúndolo 6-7(4), 6-4, 10-8, and Brandon Nakashima levelled on his debut by beating Jakub Menšík. Rafael Jódar, another debutant, beat Alexander Bublik 6-2, 6-3. Carlos Alcaraz and Menšík then beat Bublik and Taylor Fritz 6-4, 6-4 in the doubles.

Team World took both of Saturday's day matches. Tien beat Flavio Cobolli 6-3, 2-6, 10-7 on his debut. De Minaur then saved a match point in the deciding tie-break against Zverev to win 2-6, 7-6(5), 11-9, which put the holders 5-3 up.

Alcaraz answers

Alcaraz had not played a singles match since losing his US Open quarter-final to Ben Shelton, and London was his first event since. He beat Fritz 6-3, 4-6, 13-11, saving two match points in the deciding tie-break, a year after Fritz had beaten him at this event. In his on-court interview he said he had been thinking "a little bit about last year", when Team Europe lost all four matches on Saturday.

Ruud and Zverev then beat Bublik and Nakashima 6-4, 7-6(7) in the doubles. Europe went into Sunday 7-5 up and two wins from the trophy.

Sunday

Cobolli and Menšík took the first of those wins, recovering from an early break down to beat de Minaur and Fritz 7-5, 6-3. It was Cobolli's first Laver Cup win at his third event, and Menšík's second doubles win of the weekend.

That left Zverev, the Roland-Garros and US Open champion, needing one more. Tien saved three break points at 5-5 in the first set, and Zverev saved a set point on his own serve at 5-6 before taking the tie-break 7-3. He broke for 4-2 in the second set and served it out. Alcaraz v de Minaur and Jódar v Fritz were not played.

After the final point

Zverev gave the credit to the other side. "They pushed us all the way again," he said of Team World. It was his first Laver Cup singles win since 2024, and he has now been part of all six of Team Europe's titles.

The captains

Noah, in his second year, admitted he had felt pressure this time. He said he would now have a photograph with his players to keep.

This is why we play, to be able to experience these kinds of moments.

Fritz lost all three of his matches and said he had contributed no points. Bublik lost all three of his too. Agassi would not second-guess his lineups.

There were some epic battles out there. I think the sport won.
