Alexander Zverev is guaranteed to become world No. 1 on 2 November if he reaches the quarter-finals of the Erste Bank Open in Vienna, according to the ATP Tour. He is the top seed, and he opens against Spanish wild card Martin Landaluce in a tournament that runs from Monday to 1 November.
Zverev would take the top spot from Jannik Sinner, the current No. 1, the ATP says. ArenaBulletin has covered the ranking maths since Shanghai, and Zverev's route is now short: two wins. The draw gives him Landaluce first, then the winner of Tallon Griekspoor against Brandon Nakashima.
Tiafoe is the seed in Zverev's quarter
Sixth seed Frances Tiafoe is a potential quarter-final opponent for Zverev, according to the ATP's draw preview. Tiafoe opens against Lorenzo Musetti. Fourth seed Flavio Cobolli plays Grigor Dimitrov, and fifth seed Alex de Minaur starts against a qualifier. The ATP says those two are seeded to meet in the quarter-finals, in the same half of the draw as Zverev.
Alcaraz meets Khachanov, and leads their series 6-0
Carlos Alcaraz is the second seed and plays on a wild card. He opens against Karen Khachanov, a former top-10 player, and leads their head-to-head 6-0, the ATP says. This is Alcaraz's first Vienna appearance since 2021, and he is chasing his fourth tour-level title of 2026. He lost in the third round of the Shanghai Masters to Zizou Bergs.
The winner plays Nikoloz Basilashvili or home wild card Jurij Rodionov in the second round, and seventh seed Tommy Paul is a potential quarter-final opponent. Third seed Daniil Medvedev is also in Alcaraz's half. ArenaBulletin's earlier piece covered the Vienna field.
