Holger Rune went 335 days without a competitive match. It took him two days to win two of them.

The Dane returned on Friday in Denmark's Davis Cup World Group I tie against Bulgaria at the Royal Stage in Hillerød, beating Iliyan Radulov 6-3, 6-3 in an hour and 27 minutes. On Saturday he came from a set down to beat Grigor Dimitrov 3-6, 6-3, 7-6(4), and Elmer Møller closed out a 3-2 win for the hosts shortly afterwards.

What the injury was

Rune ruptured the proximal part of his left Achilles tendon on 18 October 2025, in the semi-finals of the Stockholm Open. He was leading Ugo Humbert 6-4, 2-2 when he went down, and was helped off court by an ATP physio. He confirmed the surgery on Instagram the following day.

He was 22 at the time and ranked No. 11 in the world, six months on from beating Carlos Alcaraz to win the Barcelona Open, the fifth tour title of his career. He did not play a match in 2026. Return dates came and went: the clay season, Roland-Garros, the grass, the North American hard courts. He trained with Alcaraz in Murcia in August, then withdrew from the US Open, judging himself not ready for best-of-five sets.

What the weekend proves

Not much that the rankings will notice, and that is not a criticism. Davis Cup carries no ATP ranking points. Radulov is the world No. 596 and 21 years old, and Dimitrov, a former world No. 3, was playing his first Davis Cup tie since 2015.

The Dimitrov match asked the right questions all the same. Rune lost the opening set, worked his way back into it, then failed to serve it out at 5-4 in the third before holding his nerve in the tie-break. Two singles matches inside 24 hours on an indoor hard court is a fitness test as much as a tennis one.

Where it leaves him

Ranked No. 144, from No. 11 in the world on the day he was injured. Eleven months without a tournament has taken almost all of those points off him, and Davis Cup does not replace them, so nothing about this weekend changes the number. For the rest of the tennis season he will be relying on wild cards or qualifying rather than direct entry.

Denmark's win sends them into the first round of the 2027 Davis Cup Qualifiers in February. Bulgaria drop into a World Group I play-off in the same window.

None of which is really the point. Rune is 23, he has played two matches, and he won them both. After eleven months, that is a reasonable first weekend's work.
