Holger Rune is a Danish player who turned professional at seventeen and arrived in the men's game with a temperament that drew as much comment as his forehand. He plays right-handed, with a two-handed backhand and a habit of finding his best tennis once a match has already turned against him.
He announced himself indoors in Paris in 2022, beating Novak Djokovic in the final for a first Masters 1000 title, and has since reached the quarter-finals at Roland-Garros and Wimbledon. His win over Carlos Alcaraz in the Barcelona final in 2025 was the high point of a season that ended abruptly.
That October he ruptured his left Achilles tendon during a semi-final in Stockholm and had surgery days later. He missed the whole of the following season and returned in September 2026, playing for Denmark in the Davis Cup at home in Hillerød. The question that follows him now is not whether he can still play, but whether he can get back to where he was.
