The Boston Celtics begin training camp on Tuesday with a healthy roster. Asked at Monday's media day at the Auerbach Center whether everyone was fit, president of basketball operations Brad Stevens paused, knocked on the wooden table in front of him and said yes.

That includes Jayson Tatum, more than 16 months after surgery on the Achilles tendon he tore in the 2025 playoffs. "I feel great," Tatum said. He told reporters he had used a full offseason to get stronger and more explosive.

Last season he missed the first 62 games and returned on March 6. He played 16 regular-season games and six of Boston's seven first-round games, missing Game 7 against Philadelphia with left knee stiffness. The 76ers won that game 109-100 at TD Garden. It was the first time the Celtics had lost a series after leading 3-1, and it ended a 56-26 season in which they finished second in the East.

After the Jaylen Brown trade

It was also the first media day since Boston traded Jaylen Brown to the Philadelphia 76ers in July for Paul George and four draft picks. Head coach Joe Mazzulla addressed Brown in his opening remarks, GBH News reported. He said what Brown achieved in Boston "should not be forgotten," but that Monday was "the first day of our '26-'27 season."

Tatum is now the longest-tenured Celtic, entering his 10th season. He said the business side of the NBA always plays a part at some point, and that he was grateful for what he and Brown accomplished together.

So really, just being thankful for those nine years.

Tatum said leadership is about many things, and that awareness, of himself and of the group, is the biggest. "This is year 10," he said.

The new faces

George was introduced alongside Mike Conley on September 15. On Monday he said he knows many people think his best years are behind him. According to the Boston Globe, he said hearing he is "washed" is "funny, but it's also frustrating." He put his struggles over the last two seasons down to returning from injuries too soon, not to age, and said his body is healthy again.

Conley, 38, is entering his 20th NBA season on a one-year deal.

Center Mitchell Robinson spoke to Boston reporters for the first time, after missing the introduction for a personal matter. He signed a three-year, $47.4 million contract after winning the championship with the New York Knicks. He said Mazzulla visited him in Nashville over the summer, and that he told the coach he owed him an apology for Boston's intentional fouling of him when he played for New York. Mazzulla apologized.

Stevens said he believes this roster "can score in different ways."

What comes next

Training camp opens on Tuesday. Boston's preseason starts at Cleveland on October 8, and the 76ers visit TD Garden on October 10. Opening night is at the Detroit Pistons on Tuesday, October 20, at 3 p.m. ET (21:00 CEST) on NBC and Peacock. The Knicks visit for the home opener on October 23.
