The Golden State Warriors said on Wednesday that Kristaps Porziņģis will remain out indefinitely with the same health-related matter that has kept him from training camp and the first five preseason games. The team gave no timeline for his return, and the season opens at the Los Angeles Lakers on October 21.
It leaves the Warriors without the center they agreed a two-year, $40 million contract with in late June, as they prepare to open the season without two other key players, Jimmy Butler and Moses Moody.
The team has not set a timeline
Porziņģis came to Chase Center on Tuesday for meetings with general manager Mike Dunleavy and Dr. Rick Celebrini, the team's vice president of player health and performance, the Boston Globe reported. The team said he will be around his teammates in some capacity but remains out indefinitely, with updates to come when available and appropriate. The Warriors have not described the matter as an injury or given details.
Porziņģis also posted a message on X saying he is working with doctors and experts to get fully healthy as soon as possible, according to the Globe.
A short record with Golden State
The Warriors acquired Porziņģis from the Atlanta Hawks at the February trade deadline, in the deal that sent Jonathan Kuminga and Buddy Hield to Atlanta. He played 15 games for Golden State last season, 11 of them as a starter, and 32 in total with the Hawks and the Warriors, the Globe reported. Dunleavy said he learned of the issue on September 27, the San Francisco Standard reported.
An opener without three players
Butler is recovering from a torn right ACL and Moody from a ruptured left patellar tendon, NBC Sports Bay Area reported. The Standard estimated that the Warriors would start the season with about $90 million in salary unavailable if Porziņģis is not ready.
On Monday, coach Steve Kerr did not commit to starting Porziņģis in the opening-night lineup, Field Level Media reported. "All that will be determined once we get him back here and have discussions," Kerr said.
The Warriors open at Crypto.com Arena on October 21 and host the Memphis Grizzlies at Chase Center on October 23.
