Philadelphia 76ers

The Philadelphia 76ers began life in 1946 as the Syracuse Nationals, won a championship there in 1955, and moved to Philadelphia in 1963, taking a name that refers to the signing of the Declaration of Independence in the city in 1776.

Two more titles followed. The 1967 team, built around Wilt Chamberlain, is still ranked among the best in league history, and the 1983 side swept to the championship behind Moses Malone. Between them came Julius Erving, and later Allen Iverson, whose run to the 2001 Finals remains the most-watched period of the modern club's history.

Home since 1996 is the South Philadelphia arena now called Xfinity Mobile Arena, its fifth name, holding roughly 20,000 for basketball. A new $1.5 billion building shared with the Flyers is planned for the same complex around 2030.
