New York Knicks

The New York Knicks were founded in 1946 and, along with the Celtics, are one of only two NBA teams still playing in the city where they started. Madison Square Garden, the fourth building to carry the name, opened in 1968 above Penn Station and holds 19,812 for basketball, making it the most visible arena in American sport.

The championship history was, for a long time, the problem. Titles in 1970 and 1973 under Red Holzman, then 53 years of nothing, through the Ewing teams of the 1990s that reached two Finals and lost both.

That ended in June 2026. The Knicks beat San Antonio 4-1 in the Finals, erasing a double-digit deficit in every game they won, with Jalen Brunson taking Finals MVP after a 45-point close-out in Game 5. It was the franchise's third championship.
