Greece had never beaten Germany. A deflected Kourbelis shot did it on Klopp's home debut

Germany had most of the ball in Augsburg but few clear chances, and a deflected shot from substitute Dimitrios Kourbelis gave Greece a first win in 11 meetings and six points from six.

Germany led for an hour in Klopp's first match. A debutant's pass and Gakpo's volley made it 1-1

Nmecha scored after 32 minutes and ter Stegen protected the lead until the second minute of stoppage time, when debutant Ruben van Bommel crossed for Gakpo's 25th goal for the Netherlands.

About the player

Jürgen Klopp is Germany's head coach. The DFB presented him on 24 July 2026 on a four-year contract, and he started in the job on 15 August, after the federation reached an agreement with Red Bull, where he had been Head of Global Soccer since January 2025. He succeeded Julian Nagelsmann, whose Germany side went out of the 2026 World Cup in the round of 32.

Born in Stuttgart in June 1967, Klopp spent most of his playing career at Mainz 05, joining in 1990 and playing first as a striker before moving into defence. When he retired in 2001 he became the club's coach, and in 2004 he took Mainz into the Bundesliga for the first time.

He coached Borussia Dortmund from 2008 to 2015 and Liverpool from 2015 to 2024. At Liverpool he won the 2019 Champions League and, in 2019/20, the club's first Premier League title. His teams are built on pressing hard to win the ball back straight after losing it, the approach usually called Gegenpressing.
