About the player

Sonay Kartal is a British player who was born in Sidcup, London, and grew up in Brighton. She started at six at the Pavilion & Avenue Tennis Club in Hove, where she still trains, following her older brother, a county-level player, into a sport she was at first too shy to try.

Her breakthrough came in 2024, when she reached the third round of Wimbledon as a qualifier and won her first WTA title at the Jasmin Open in Monastir that September. In 2025 she made her Billie Jean King Cup debut against Germany, went a round further at the All England Club and reached her first WTA 1000 quarter-final in Beijing.

A stress fracture in her back, suffered at Indian Wells in March 2026, kept her off the tour for six months and cost her three of the four majors. She returned at the Billie Jean King Cup Finals in Shenzhen that September.
