About the player

Mikel Arteta is Arsenal's manager, appointed on 20 December 2019 in succession to Unai Emery. Born in San Sebastián in March 1982, he came through Barcelona's youth system, played on loan at Paris Saint-Germain and joined Rangers in 2002.

After a short spell back home at Real Sociedad, he moved to Everton in 2005, first on loan and then permanently, and spent six years at Goodison Park in central midfield. Arsenal signed him in 2011. He was named club captain ahead of the 2014/15 season and retired in 2016. He represented Spain at youth level but never won a senior cap.

He went straight into coaching as an assistant to Pep Guardiola at Manchester City, where he spent three and a half years before returning to Arsenal for his first job as a head coach.
